Nor is it safe to assume that you can only measure success of the Surface as a binary "did it take over the tablet and PC market or not". What if the purpose was to provide a baseline of what a behind-the-glass PC could look like to spur its traditional manufacturing partners (HP/Lenovo/Asus/Acer/etc) to produce better tablets and hybrid devices.
